Supporting Young Carers in Our Academy
We understand the significant role that Young Carers play within their families and the additional responsibilities they take on. Our Academy is committed to a whole-Academy approach to identifying and supporting Young Carers, ensuring they receive the help they need.
Who is a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is anyone under the age of 18 who regularly helps care for a family member or friend who is ill, has a disability, struggles with mental health, or has an addiction.
The level and type of care a Young Carer provides can vary depending on the condition of the person they support, how often care is needed, and their family circumstances. Many Young Carers take on responsibilities that are typically expected of adults, including:
- Shopping, cooking, and cleaning
- Managing medication or finances
- Providing personal care
- Helping someone leave the house
- Supervising or checking in on someone
- Offering emotional support
The Hidden Challenges of Young Carers
There are likely many Young Carers in every school, but their struggles often go unnoticed. Without the right support, their responsibilities can affect their emotional and physical well-being, school performance, and future career opportunities.
That’s why it’s essential to identify Young Carers as early as possible so we can provide the right support and ensure they fully participate in their education.
How We Support Young Carers
We work closely with Carers Support West Cumbria, a Cumbria-based organisation dedicated to supporting Young Carers in school and the wider community. In addition, our Academy offers one-to-one support to ensure students receive the help they need.
