It was discovered during a routine asbestos survey that there had been a disturbance to building materials containing asbestos, a material found in most UK schools. Swift and effective remedial action was taken.
This action included closing the school today to undertake airborne testing in the areas that were isolated and affected by the disturbance. This was a precautionary measure taken to reassure staff and pupils. The results show that the areas are safe under UK HSE legislation. At this stage no further disturbances have been discovered. We are unable to say at this time whether the full site survey will be completed today or whether this may need to continue into tomorrow. We will open the school once we are in a position to give the necessary reassurances. A further update will be issued later today.
