Marnie Jackson from West Cumbria Rugby League has been working with all the Key Stage 3 girls in their PE lessons since Christmas. This programme is aiming to encourage girls participation and offer competition experiences in rugby league. The year 8 and 9 girls were then invited to take part in the RFL organised festival in preparation for the Champion Schools Competition later in the month. For most of the girls this was their first ever experience of competitive full contact rugby league. Matches were played against Workington Academy and Netherhall. As the games progressed the girls became more confident with the rules and how to play a competitive fixture. Our star players were Niema Baker-O’Fee and Katelyn Mellon who were both awarded player of the tournament prizes. All the girls who played, represented the academy really well, enjoyed the afternoon and are now looking forward to the next round just before Easter.
