Improved GCSE results for The Whitehaven Academy

Our Year 11 students are celebrating today as they receive their GCSE exam results with forty-four per cent (44%) achieving A* – C grades in English and Maths – an eight per cent (8%) improvement from the school’s 2015 results. The percentage of students achieving five or more A*-C grades (including English and Maths) has also increased by almost three per cent (3%).

The following students performed “exceptionally well”, gaining top grades in all their GCSE subjects:

  • Cameron Bowskill (10 A*s)
  • Jasper Lithgow (10 A*s)
  • Ben Massey (6 A*s, 2 As, 2 Bs)
  • Kieron Hodgson (6 As, 4 Bs)
  • Connor Tyson (2 A*s, 4 As, 2 Bs, 1 C)
  • Chloe Mason (5 As, 2 Bs, 3 Cs)
  • Abbi Bennett (4 As, 3 Bs, 3 Cs)

A number of students also successfully gained BTEC qualifications. Jenny Nimmo, Vice Principal said: “We are delighted with the progress that has been made with our students and we are incredibly proud of their results. We acknowledge that we still have some work to do, but I firmly believe we are now on the path to making The Whitehaven Academy a ‘good’ school with lots of exciting prospects.”

Mr Warren Turner, who will be joining The Whitehaven Academy in September as Principal, added: “These results are very encouraging and students should feel very proud of their achievements. The school now has a strong leadership team in place and a new staffing structure from September and we are fully committed to moving the school forward and establishing it as the school of choice for students in and around Whitehaven.”

The Whitehaven Academy is part of multi-academy trust Bright Tribe Trust. Director of School Improvement at the Trust, Mary McKeeman commented: “We are delighted with this improvement in GCSE results and are very proud of all our students. Bright Tribe remains committed to the school and to the Whitehaven community. We are looking forward to the new term and to continuing on our journey to make the school ‘outstanding’.”
