Ms McGhee is finalist in Cumbrian Artist of the Year

Our very own Art Teacher Ms McGhee has made it to the final five in the Cumbrian Artist of the Year competition!

The competition was open to all Cumbrian artists and received over 70 applications. From these, 25 artists were selected to create an exhibition that is running at The Rheged Centre until 28th June 2015.

From these 25 artists a further shortlisting process took place at the weekend to get to the five finalists. Visitors to the exhibition are able to vote for their favourite, with the artist who receives the most votes winning the People’s Choice award and a £500 prize.

Ms McGhee’s work is mostly about functioning as an artist in West Cumbria and invites audiences to share conversations arising from Cumbrian traditions and Cumbrian life and events. One of the pieces shown in the exhibition, ‘Berries’, won a competition earlier this year and was shown in Miami Beach.

On her success so far Ms McGhee commented: “The bonus about being on the shortlist is that all the shortlisted artists have been asked to judge the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award; as an art educator this is a real privilege.”

The exhibition is part of the wider C-Art programme, organised by Penrith-based Eden Arts, which celebrates the best of the visual arts in Cumbria.

The event aims to highlight the depth and skill of Cumbrian artists and showcase them to both locals and visitors from outside the region.

Entry to the exhibition is free, and it’s open from 10:30am to 4:40pm every day of the week at the Rheged gallery, in Penrith until 28th June. Pop along – and make sure you vote for Ms McGhee!

A big well done to Ms McGhee and fingers crossed for the final result!
