County Sportshall Athletics Final

On Wednesday 25th February, seven year 8 students from The Whitehaven Academy represented the academy at the County Indoor Athletics final in Penrith.

The students were joined by participants from St Bees School and together we made up the Copeland team. The students took part in events such as the indoor shot put, the 8 lap indoor race and the triple jump and they were fantastic ambassadors for the academy and gave 100% in every event.

The students had the opportunity to mix with fellow competitors and to engage in competitive sporting races alongside some of the most talented sportsmen and women in our county. They thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity and one of our students, Louie Lithgoe, joined PE Teacher Mr Smith for a live broadcast with BBC Radio Cumbria. Louie was a natural and we were delighted with how confident and mature he was.

The event was a huge success and the atmosphere was brilliant. Mr Smith commented: “As a PE teacher, it was inspiring to see so many young people from our area engaging with athletics and enjoying the competitive challenge. Unfortunately we as a school finished in 6th place but this really didn’t matter due to the fact that we had given it our all. The students were exemplary and we had a great day out which we will remember for quite some time.”
