We are delighted to announce that a new Principal has been appointed for the academy.
Philip Grant will join us from his current post as Director of Studies at Newton Rigg College where he has worked for six years. Philip has played a lead role in improving the delivery of teaching and learning across the college and developing a curriculum that is relevant to the needs of students, employers and the community, including subjects not traditionally delivered by the college. Philip led the development of high quality facilities to support and inspire students and engaged the community in the development of the college, the facilities and the curriculum. During his time at Newton Rigg College student numbers increased from 350 to over 800 full time students.
Commenting on his appointment, Philip said: “I am thrilled and honoured to take up the post of principal at The Whitehaven Academy. Bright Tribe Trust has some exciting new developments that will have a positive impact in the region. I am looking forward to meeting the students and working closely with the governors, staff and community to ensure the academy is the natural school of choice in the region.
“I strongly believe in developing the individual and building on their talents. Exposing them to high quality education and teaching to maximise the potential of every learner and ensure they have the right skills and qualifications to develop their potential and take their place in the future – whether that is further education or the world of work.”
Gary Kelly, Bright Tribe Regional Director, commented: “I look forward to welcoming Philip into the Bright Tribe family and to working with him to further improve The Whitehaven Academy and deliver an outstanding offer of education and personal development for our students.”
Philip will take up his new post after the Easter break, until which time Yvonne Sharples and Vanessa Ray will continue to share the role of Acting Principal.
