‘Meet the professionals’

We are hosting a series of ‘Meet the Professional’ events during the Autumn term, to give students an insight into different professions. The intention is to help students find out more about potential careers and motivate them to work towards achieving their goals.

Professionals from a range of different sectors are visiting the academy to talk about their careers, the routes into their profession, and the qualifications and experience required, to help raise the aspirations of students and show them the breadth of different career options available.

Professionals are scheduled to visit the academy every two weeks to speak to the students and answer questions.

The first professional to visit was Jessica Lawson, Football Development Officer at Cumberland FA. Following her talk she commented: “I was thrilled when asked to be a guest for the ‘Meet the Professionals’ programme. It allowed me to share my stories and experiences through school and university which helped me get into a career in Sport Development. This programme will not only allow students to make new contacts in an industry that interests them, but will give them a platform to ask questions, seek guidance and get advice on where to go next. I had a brilliant time at The Whitehaven Academy and hope that I inspired students.”

Other guests include: Gavin Morgan, System Engineer ENMF at Sellafield; Matthew Woodruff, Technical Director at The Knowledge Network; Rebecca Jones, professional make-up artist and beauty blogger; Debbie Blair and apprentices from Gen2; Rebecca Seager, Physiotherapist for the NHS.
