We are delighted that one of our pupils has been called up to join Team GB at a swim camp in South Africa this week.
Anna Newlands in Year 11 will jet off to Pretoria on 27 February to take part in the three week long swimming training camp. Anna will be mentored by and share a room with two time Olympic gold winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington!
Anna, who swims for the county and at national level, said: “I’m really excited. I want to seize this chance to train with Team GB swimmers. As well as the excellent coaching, having Becky as team manager will be really helpful and she will be able to give me excellent advice.”
Lynette Norris, Principal at The Whitehaven Academy, commented: “This is a wonderful achievement by Anna to get called up. It is absolutely fantastic to see such a great role model for younger pupils gain recognition for all of her hard work. Not only is she a fantastic athlete but she is also a straight A grade student and a lead prefect with a great attitude and respect for everything in her school life.”
This amazing opportunity will allow Anna to train with elite swimmers, many several years her senior and currently studying in their second or third year at University, as they prepare for future Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo. The coaching provided will help ensure that high flying Anna can maintain a great work life balance and ensure her every success in the future, both in sport and academically.
We believe strongly that sport is an integral part of school life, and in addition to our own PE staff mentors, we are working with the Manchester Giants basketball team to improve the sporting opportunities available to pupils and to engage more pupils in sporting activities.
